A great first week of spring sports for WRDSB schools. Rugby and Soccer season has started and teams are in it to win.

Cameron Heights has proven their strength in both their boys’ and girls’ teams with several wins just this first week alone.

The Cameron girls’ rugby team took down EDSS in their opening game of the season with a score of 32-10, as well as GCI 42-5 on Wednesday.

The CHCI soccer teams are starting out strong as well as with the girls defeated past champions WCI Vikings 2-1 on Wednesday. Both goals were scored by grade ten student Jaia Riggan. The boys team also took home a win after beating ECI 1-0 on Thursday.

The KCI girls’ rugby team was determined to defend their WCSSAA championship from last year, kicking off their season 35-0 against the Forest Heights Trojans, followed by a 32-0 win against WCI on Wednesday.

Vikings and Raiders are a well-matched set, but the Vikings had trouble breaking through the Raiders’ lines. New to the Raiders’ rugby team, Thea Taylor, showed no signs of being a rookie after two near tries for the girls and catching the ball one handed.

Raider spirit was high on the field, led by grade 12 co-captains Olivia Mickie and Erin Markle and carried out on the sidelines by the ladies’ five coaches, including Leah McBain who graduated from KCI last year after helping to lead the Raider girls to OFSAA last spring.

More soccer and rugby games to come next week. Schedules are posted at wcssaa.ca. For updates and information follow@wcssaaathletics on twitter.
