Grand River CI Emerges Undefeated After WCSSAA Hockey Final

The WCSSAA boys hockey final was greeted by an impressive turnout this past Tuesday, February 23rd. Students, coaches, and parents filled the stands at the Waterloo Rec Center to cheer on the region’s top teams: Grand River and WCI. Grand River came out victorious with a 5-1 win.

Both teams have had impressive standings this season, Grand River in the lead with 27 points and WCI in second with 24 points. Both teams have carried out the season with consistently high scores, and Grand River’s Nathan Laird (#19) currently holds the record for most points this season.

Going into the game, Grand River stood undefeated with 13 wins and a single tie, versus WCI placed in second with 12 wins and 2 losses. From the moment the puck dropped, both teams made it clear they had earned their place in the final.

Grand River claimed their first goal barely a minute into the first period, scored by Nathan Laird, followed by several close saves for both teams, kicking off an eventful game filled with broken sticks and a few penalties apiece.

Behind by 2 points at the end of the first period, Nikolas Paradis scored for WCI shortly into the second. Grand River goal scorers also included Luke Kozak, Nolan Kelly, and Logan George.

Grand River fans cheered at the final buzzer, marking the score 5-1 for Grand River. Both teams advanced to CWOSSA later that week where Grand River won once again, continuing their streak.
